It is at once spiritual, philosophical and psychological – romantic, adventurous and contemplative. Most staggering is its unprecedented synthesis of a grail quest with the search for a cure with the journey to a city of gold to the axis mundi, to enlightenment, space, death and The Fountain of life. The Mayan mythology of the Ceiba tree is delightful to see as a mythologist. The comparative effort, however – the archetypal brilliance, fractaling narratives and spiritual training – it steals a mythologist’s heart.
