Sir Tristan, or Tristram in Old English, was a contemporary of King Arthur and a Knight of the Round Table. He was the nephew and champion of King Mark of Cornwall and the son of Meliodas, King of Lyoness. Tristan’s mother died when he was born, and as a young man he went to live with his uncle, Mark in Cornwall, becoming his uncle’s champion. Sir Tristan became the champion of his uncle upon defeating and killing Marhaus of Ireland in a duel. That defeat led to a truce with King Anguish of Ireland who arranged for his daughter, Iseult to be married to King Mark. Sir Tristan who was sent to Ireland to fetch the would be Queen, but while in the process of bringing her back to Cornwall, Tristan and Iseult fell hopelessly in love with one another. Upon realizing there was no hope for them to stay together and live a normal life, they fled from King Mark and lived the rest of their days on the run.
Sir Tristan, whose name means "sorrow", was so called because of his mother's death at his own birth. Tristan was a noble knight with all the necessary skills of hunting, jousting, dancing, and harp playing. Tristan is now remembered for his love affair with Isolde.. His uncle, King Mark of Cornwall, sent Tristan to Ireland to escort the beautiful Isolde back to Cornwall to marry King Mark. On the voyage back to England, Tristan and Isolde drank a love potion mistakingly believingt hat it was wine. This potion, which had been meant to enhance the marriage of Mark and Isolde, instead bound Tristran and Isolde inextricably and tragically in love.
Tristan (also known as Tristran, Tristram, etc.) is one of the main characters of the Tristan and Iseult story, a Cornish hero and one of the Knights of the Round Table featuring in the Matter of Britain. He is the son of Blancheflor and Rivalen (in later versions Isabelle and Meliodas), and the nephew of King Mark of Cornwall, sent to fetch Iseult back from Ireland to wed the king. Tristan makes his first medieval appearance in the early twelfth century in Celtic folklore circulating in the north of France.
The young Tristan ventures to Ireland to ask the hand of the princess Isolde for his uncle, King Mark of Cornwall, and, having slain a dragon that is devastating the country, succeeds in his mission. On the homeward journey Tristan and Isolde, by misadventure, drink the love potion prepared by the queen for her daughter and King Mark. Henceforward, the two are bound to each other by an imperishable love that dares all dangers and makes light of hardships but does not destroy their loyalty to the king.
