Which stage of life is the most important? Some might claim that infancy is the key stage, when a baby’s brain is wide open to new experiences that will influence all the rest of its later life. When a child is born, it instills in its parents and other caregivers a sense of optimism; a sense that this new life may bring something new and special into the world. Hence, the newborn represents the sense of hope that we all nourish inside of ourselves to make the world a better place. The infant is a vibrant and seemingly unlimited source of energy. Babies thus represent the inner dynamo of humanity, ever fueling the fires of the human life cycle with new channels of psychic power.
EILEITHYIA (Ilithyia) was the goddess of childbirth and labour pains. According to some there were two Eileithyiai (Eileithyiae)--one who furthered birth and one who protracted the labour. Her name means "she who comes to aid" or "relieve" from the Greek word elêluthyia. Her Roman counterpart was Lucina ("Light bringer") or Natio ("Birth"). Eileithyia was depicted as a woman wielding a torch, representing the burning pains of childbirth, or with her arms raised in the air to bring the child to the light.
There were different theories in the ancient world about what exactly it was that male and female parents contributed to conceiving a child. In some versions, men provided seed, and this was what gave the baby its identity and even its shape. Women only provided the blood, the raw material on which the seed would act. In other versions, both men and women provided seed, but men’s seed was thicker and stronger. One model had a scale running from the very manly boy to the very feminine girl, with other possibilities – the feminine boy, or the ‘tomboy’ girl – in between. The child that was produced depended on the balance of the contributions of seed from the father and the mother, both in quality and quantity.
After around nine months, the foetus is fully developed to be born. This stage in human development marks the period from birth to age one. Infancy is the earliest part of childhood, where the infant grows in size and shape. During this stage, the infant requires a lot of attention as they are completely dependent on their mothers. Infants develop their behaviour, physiology and cognition. Gradually, the infants learn to suck, swallow and cry if they are in an uncomfortable situation. Since the infants are unable to speak, crying is their way of communicating. The mother tends to breastfeed their infants during this stage.
